What Makes 18k PVD Gold Jewelry Waterproof (and How to Make Yours Last)
Share
You've probably seen the claims before: waterproof jewelry, tarnish-free, shower-safe. But what actually makes a piece of jewelry hold up to real life — sweat, saltwater, daily wear — without fading or turning your skin green?
At Envie Jewelry, we build every piece around one answer: 18k PVD gold over 316L surgical-grade stainless steel. Here's what that means, why it matters, and how to keep your jewelry looking flawless for years to come.
Gold Plated vs. Gold Filled vs. PVD Gold: What's the Real Difference?
Most affordable gold jewelry falls into one of three categories — and the differences are significant.
Gold Plated jewelry is made by electroplating a thin layer of gold (often as little as 0.5 microns) over a base metal like brass or copper. It looks beautiful at first, but that thin layer wears away quickly — especially with moisture, sweat, or friction. Within weeks or months, the base metal shows through, and tarnishing begins.
Gold Filled jewelry has a thick layer of real gold (at least 5% of its total weight) permanently bonded to a base metal. It lasts significantly longer than standard gold plating, but the higher gold content also makes it more expensive.
PVD Gold (Physical Vapor Deposition) is a completely different process. Instead of electroplating, PVD uses a vacuum chamber to vaporize real gold and bond it to the surface at a molecular level. The result is a coating that is 2–5x thicker than standard plating, far more scratch-resistant, and chemically bonded in a way that resists moisture, sweat, chlorine, and saltwater.
Combined with a 316L stainless steel base — the same grade used in surgical instruments — our jewelry is hypoallergenic, corrosion-resistant, and built to last through real life.
Why 18k PVD Gold Doesn't Tarnish
Tarnishing happens when metal reacts with oxygen, moisture, or chemicals in the air and on your skin. Traditional gold-plated jewelry tarnishes because the base metal (brass, copper) is exposed as the thin gold layer wears away.
With PVD coating over stainless steel, there's no reactive base metal to tarnish. The stainless steel core is already corrosion-resistant, and the PVD gold layer is dense enough to act as a true barrier — not just a cosmetic finish. That's why you can wear Envie pieces in the shower, at the beach, or through a workout without worrying about damage.

How to Care for Your 18k PVD Gold Jewelry
PVD gold is tough — but a little care goes a long way in keeping your pieces looking their best.
✓ Safe to wear in water. Showers, pools, and the ocean are all fine. Rinse with fresh water after saltwater or chlorine exposure and pat dry.
✓ Sweat-proof. Wear it to the gym, on runs, or through a long summer day. Wipe down with a soft cloth after heavy sweating.
✗ Skip the ultrasonic cleaners. These can be too aggressive for PVD coatings. A soft, damp cloth is all you need.
✓ Store it properly. Keep pieces in a soft pouch or jewelry box when not wearing them to prevent scratching from other jewelry.
✓ Clean gently. Use a soft microfiber cloth and mild soap with warm water. Rinse thoroughly and dry completely before storing.

The Bottom Line
Not all gold jewelry is created equal. If you've been burned by pieces that tarnish, fade, or irritate your skin, the difference almost always comes down to materials and process. PVD gold over surgical-grade stainless steel isn't a trend — it's a technology that delivers real, lasting results.
At Envie Jewelry, that's the only standard we build to. Because you deserve jewelry that keeps up with your life.
